The Operating Room (OR)-Registered Nurse (RN) plans, directs, and coordinates the care of patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures, taking into consideration respect for the individual and recognition of the important contribution that each team member makes to the patient's wellbeing.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to: Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age specific components. Coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Knowledge and active participation in the unit/program level quality improvement process and initiatives as well as customer service programs. Proficiency in both the circulator and scrub role within the OR and competence in all surgical specialties served. Maintain knowledge of current Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Directives, and service level standard operating procedures (SOPs). Ensure the sterility of the surgical field is maintained and all instrumentation and equipment in play is used in a safe and efficient manner. Protect the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal sources, and extraneous objects. Perform counting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items. Participate in the Time Out process to ensure correct site, side, and level, and follow implant and tissue/tissue-based product documentation, policy and procedures. Manage the patient specimens appropriately. Administer medications safely and correctly. Perform interventions to maintain patient wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels. Perform interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection. Ensure comprehensive documentation is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record. Knowledge of reusable instruments, equipment, medical devices, or supplies are in use in the clinical area. Other duties as assigned.
