The City of Pleasanton is excited to invite applications for the position of Park Landscape Maintenance Worker I. This entry-level role plays an important part in maintaining and improving Pleasanton’s 46 parks, 45 miles of trails, and over 800 acres of open space, some of the community’s most valued assets. Working under the direction of a Lead Park Maintenance Worker, you’ll perform a wide variety of landscaping and park maintenance tasks that directly enhance the beauty, safety, and enjoyment of public spaces. In This Role, You Will:

  • Work under the direction of a Lead Park Maintenance Worker

  • Safely operate vehicles and maintenance equipment

  • Perform turf maintenance and renovation

  • Maintain and repair playgrounds, trails, and open spaces

  • Perform maintenance of landscape medians 

  • Operate and maintain irrigation systems to improve water conservation

  • Collect trash and debris in City parks

  • Apply herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the City’s IPM plan

  • Perform carpentry repairs and upgrades to park infrastructure

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities.
A typical qualifying background would be graduation from high school, or GED equivalent and one year of experience performing similar duties in landscape maintenance or landscape construction.

License:
Possess a valid Class C California driver's license.

Possession of California Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) with Landscape Maintenance (Category B) for pesticide application is desirable.

Other Requirements:
  1. Work in all weather conditions and in contact with dust, dirt, and pollens.
  2. Work with chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides.
  3. Wear a uniform and safety gear furnished by the City.
  4. Use herbicides and pesticides.
  5. Work at varying heights using aerial equipment.
Knowledge of:
  1. Pruning practices: using hand and power tools to ensure healthy and uniform plant growth. Turf maintenance, including mowing, edging, aerating, watering, and fertilizing. 
  2. Planting procedures, including proper hole width and depth, stake and tie placement, and initial water and fertilizer needs.
  3. Plant care, including requirements for water and nutrients.
  4. Basic irrigation system components, including installation, adjustment, and repair procedures.
  5. Common safety procedures, including safe lifting techniques.
Skill to: 
  1. Read and understand materials such as job instructions, equipment manuals, and safety manuals.
  2. Read and use blueprints, schematics, and maps.
  3. Use basic math, including whole numbers and fractions, to calculate amounts of fluids to add to equipment and amounts of fertilizers to apply.
  4. Appropriately select and safely use hand and power tools.
  5. Use computer for work activity.
  6. Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment, including basic troubleshooting to identify and correct minor mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
  7. Safely and properly operate large trucks, dump trucks, loaders, mowers, aerial towers, and tractors, including backing and dumping.
  8. Follow written and oral instructions.
  9. Identify shrubs, trees, and ground covers maintained by the City.
  10. Bend, reach, twist, and stoop; stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  11. Independently lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds and up to 95 pounds with assistance.
  12. Interact effectively and courteously with supervisors, co-workers, and public.
  13. Write legibly to record measurements and to complete maintenance records and simple forms.
  14. Work effectively and harmoniously as part of a crew.
  15. Perform routine assembly and repair of playground equipment and repair of wood and concrete structures.
  16. Stand or walk for prolonged periods on even, uneven and sloping surfaces.
