DEFINITION:
This position performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks under supervision, including routine and physically demanding work related to the construction, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of parks, and public facilities. The employee operates tools and equipment, follows safety procedures, and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Parks and Facilities Maintenance Worker I serves as the entry-level classification in the series. Incumbents receive on-the-job training and perform basic construction, maintenance, and repair tasks under close supervision. Work typically involves assisting others with more complex assignments and independently completing less skilled tasks.
Parks and Facilities Maintenance Worker II functions at the journey level, performing a broader range of duties with increased independence and discretion. Incumbents apply developed knowledge and skills to complete assignments requiring varied levels of labor expertise.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Manual dexterity and visual acuity are required for operating tools and machinery, reading gauges and instructions, and performing maintenance tasks with precision. Hearing and speaking ability is essential for safe communication in noisy outdoor environments and around moving equipment.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in maintenance of related City facilities.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience of construction or maintenance experience using heavy equipment in the installation, construction and/or repair of related City facilities.
Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements:
Level I
- Possession of a responsible driving record and a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required at the time of appointment and is a condition of continued employment. Loss of the Class C license is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- A California Class B Driver’s License is desirable.
- Possession of or ability to obtain C.P.R. and First Aid certification.
- Possession of a responsible driving record and a valid California Class B Driver’s License with the appropriate endorsements is required within 6 months of appointment and is a condition of continued employment. - Uses hand tools such as shovels, picks, mattocks, axes, and brooms for construction and maintenance tasks.
- Cleans, adjusts, and services tools and equipment.
- Sweeps and maintains cleanliness of work areas.
- Deploys sandbags for flood protection at designated locations.
- Operates sign-marking equipment including silkscreen apparatus, stencils, welding tools, pipe threaders, and power saws.
- Maintains records of time, materials, and work performed.
- Rakes, waters, and cleans park areas; sanitizes and services restrooms and public facilities.
- Performs mowing, trimming of bushes and trees, weeding around picnic tables, removing fallen limbs and trees, and collecting trash in park areas.
- Sweeps and washes courts, theaters, walkways, and other paved areas.
- Weeds and cultivates shrubs, flower beds, and landscaped areas.
- Operates high-powered equipment and hand tools to trim, fertilize, renovate, and maintain turf and plantings.
- Regulates and adjusts automatic sprinkler and lighting systems; repairs irrigation components.
- Assists with park construction and improvement projects.
- Inspect, maintain and repair playground and other park equipment; install playground structures; maintain sports fields; make necessary repairs on park benches and tables.
- Documents work orders and maintains accurate records and reports.
- Removes graffiti from buildings, signs, and concrete surfaces.
- Cleans and maintains public buildings, including mopping, vacuuming, restroom sanitation, and trash removal.
- Build and move furniture and office equipment.
- Repair light fixtures and replace light bulbs.
- Sets up and removes equipment, signage, and materials for City-sponsored events and activities.
- Set-up cones, signs and barricades to maintain safe flow of traffic during special events or street maintenance activities.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Performs all the duties of Level I.
- Maintain inventory for all City buildings; order needed supplies as necessary.
- Assists supervisors with assigned tasks and crew coordination.
- Trains and supports other employees in operational procedures.
