This vacancy is located at the Northport VA Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs, in Northport, NY. The Supervisory Project Engineer serves as expert in the design of the medical care environment, including all hospital building features, automated building management and environmental control systems, and critical utility systems, as well as the oversight of related construction including construction in and adjacent to operational healthcare environments.
- Engineering Project Management and Administration: Makes recommendations to the Chief of Engineering for final approval, and has responsibility and accountability for all aspects of the Medical Center Design and Construction program and oversight. Collaborates with operations and program managers to ensure integrated goals and priorities for all projects are met. Works closely with peers in other service lines to meet their project needs as internal customers and the needs of external customers as well. Provides professional and technical guidance and direction and review of assigned programs, including professional engineering work in several disciplines such as; architecture, civil engineering, energy engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, fire safety and safety engineering. Manages human resource functions such as hiring, performance, training and development. Ensures internal personnel-related programs are dealt with in a timely and efficient manner; communicates agency and local policies and priorities to all employees within the projects section. Delegates to subordinates the authority and responsibility to carry out assigned tasks; follows progress of each and recommends improvement to be made where warranted; ensures labor/management relations are maintained in accordance with Medical Center policy and procedures. Provides technical advice on a wide range of engineering issues, including the Strategic Capital Investment Plan, Capital Asset Inventory, Capital Asset Resource Survey, Deferred Maintenance, and a myriad of engineering related topics. Participates in discussion of proposed capital projects for the station and makes preliminary designs of major alterations, improvements, and additions to implement the Medical Center programs. Receives administrative direction from the Chief, Engineering Service with assignments in terms of broadly defined project related functions. Provides Engineering/Architectural and Construction Administration Oversite: Provides a complete professional project engineering service to meet the needs and requirements of the medical and administrative staff of the Medical Center. Provides professional advice to improve such plans, specifications, and analyses. Directs necessary changes and furnishes assistance as required to ensure a positive outcome. Advises subordinate personnel on methods and procedures to be used on highly complex projects. Oversees subordinate professionals (i.e., engineers or architects) work. Serves as technical authority, providing expert advice pertaining to the design and construction of facilities and structures in a large geographical region, and in a complex functional specialization. Reviews subordinates' activity plans, specifications, and cost estimates for technical adequacy and feasibility. Researches and/or analyzes problems, issues, or program requirements related to all areas of the facility and all facets of Projects Engineering Section. Provides expert analysis and advice for complex program issues. Researches and provides technical recommendations pertaining to a wide-range of national codes and standards including but not limited to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), OSHA, TJC, EPA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Develops and advises on administrative requirements for the entire scope of services provided by Projects Section Makes best use of present resources, planning for future needs and implementation of new resources.
