Chief Medical Information Officer

Position Summary

The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) serves as the senior physician leader responsible for aligning clinical practice, technology, informatics, and digital transformation initiatives across the organization. The CMIO acts as the bridge between clinical operations and information technology, ensuring that digital solutions are adopted in an effort to enhance patient care, clinician experience, operational performance, quality outcomes, and organizational strategy.

Under the direction and supervision of the CIO, the CMIO provides strategic leadership for electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support, data analytics, the use of artificial intelligence (AI), clinical workflow optimization, interoperability, and digital innovation initiatives. The role partners closely with executive leadership, physicians, nursing leaders, operational stakeholders, and technology teams to drive adoption and value realization from technology investments.

Education

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) - Required
• Active medical license in good standing - Required
• Board certification in a clinical specialty - Required
• Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Informatics, Public Health, or related field - Preferred

Experience

• Minimum 7–10 years of clinical practice experience - Required
• Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in healthcare operations, informatics, or technology-enabled transformation - Required
• Extensive knowledge of healthcare issues, trends, in complex healthcare delivery settings; Demonstrated success leading physician engagement and technology adoption initiatives - Required
• Experience with major EHR platforms such as Meditech, Epic Systems, Oracle Health, or equivalent with Meditech Expanse; Experience with AI governance, data analytics, and digital health strategy; Experience leading large-scale EHR implementation or optimization programs with Meditech Expanse; Experience in academic medical centers, integrated delivery networks, or large health systems - Preferred

License & Certification

Core Job Functions

1. Strategic Leadership: Align technology investments with organizational strategic, clinical, operational, and financial goals.  Serve as the physician champion for digital transformation and innovation initiatives.
2. Clinical Informatics Leadership: Lead the optimization, adoption, and governance of clinical information systems; specifically, Meditech Expanse and the accompanying software partners.  Ensure clinical workflows are effectively supported by technology solutions.  Drive physician engagement and clinician satisfaction with digital tools.
3. Electronic Health Record (EHR) Leadership: Serve as executive physician sponsor for EHR implementation, optimization, upgrades, and transformation initiatives.  Oversee physician engagement in EHR governance committees.
4. Quality, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure technology solutions support patient safety, quality outcomes, and regulatory requirements.  Collaborate with quality and patient safety leaders to leverage informatics in performance improvement initiatives.
5. Physician Engagement and Change Management (Hospital and Medical Group): Act as the primary physician liaison between clinicians and technology teams.
6. Governance and Collaboration: Collaborate with physician leadership, nursing leadership, operational executives, and IT teams.  Partner with the CIO, and other leaders to advance organizational objectives.
