The Supervisory Health Technician (Ophthalmology) in a Level 2 or 3 facility performs difficult ophthalmic technical duties with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment. At the Supervisory GS-10 level, the Health Technician (Ophthalmology) preforms complex assignments and program management duties such as overseeing the integration between ophthalmic medical devices and the electronic medical record system.

  • The Supervisory Health Technician GS-10 (Ophthalmology) duties include but not limited to the following: Functions or Scope of Practice Preparing work assignments Monitoring clinical performances of HT (Ophthalmology) staff, volunteers, and/or students, Conducting performance appraisals, and other clinical and administrative responsibilities to ensure that the mission of the service and the medical center has been satisfied. Assures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements, and the quality management program, assuring corrective action is initiated as needed. Assures orientation and competency assessment of assigned staff. Develops policies and procedures Manages document control. Develops performance standards, position descriptions and functional statements. Assumes responsibility for professional and administrative management of an assigned area to include budget execution. Maintains interdepartmental relations with other services to accomplish medical center goals. May have overall responsibility for planning, assessing, and evaluating programs to ensure proper coordination between care delivered by the program and overall delivery of healthcare within the facility, or coordination of non-VA care as appropriate. Supervisory Controls Supervision Administrative management and direction of Health Technicians (Ophthalmology) Monitoring clinical performances (Ophthalmology) Staff, volunteers, and/ or students Conducting performance appraisals, and other clinical and administrative responsibilities to ensure that the mission of the service and the medical center has been satisfied. Planning and directing Health Technician (Ophthalmology) staff activities for the service or equivalent unit at the outpatient clinic. Responsible to the Chief Ophthalmology Program Coordinator (if present) and the Chief of Ophthalmology Customer Service Meets the needs of customers while supporting the Medical Center and Servicemissions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors,volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies andprocedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructivelyand appropriately Age, Development and Cultural Needs of Patients Provides care and/or services appropriate to the age of the patients being served, and which is appropriate to the cognitive; emotional, and chronological maturation of the patient. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age- specific needs and to provide care needed as described in the services' policies and procedures. Takes into consideration age-related differences of the various veteran populations with this institution. Demonstrate the knowledge of the changes associated with aging and possess the ability to provide care/support based upon age related factors. Ensures staff receives training in these categories. Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved. Computer Security Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA guidelines. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion.
