Citizenship and Immigration Services careers

Federal immigration administration is older than the agency now running it: Congress created the first Office of Immigration inside the Treasury Department in 1891, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service carried the work for 70 years. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services took over the service side on March 1, 2003, set up under the Homeland Security Act to focus exclusively on administering benefit applications while enforcement and border security went to ICE and Customs and Border Protection. Working at USCIS means the adjudication and citizenship side of the immigration system, casework rather than enforcement.
