Congress created the U.S. Geological Survey by act in 1879, and it is still the science arm of the Department of the Interior, run from Reston, Virginia. The work splits into five mission areas: Core Science Systems, Ecosystems, Natural Hazards, Water Resources, and one that bundles Geology, Energy and Minerals.
