In Carlsbad, in New Mexico's southeastern corner, Southeast New Mexico College is the only higher education provider in its area, and its lineage runs deeper than the name suggests: it was founded in 1950 as the Carlsbad Instructional Center, the state's first two year college. After six decades as a branch campus of New Mexico State University, it became an independent college effective July 1, 2021. It offers certificate programs of 30 to 36 credit hours, associate degrees in arts and applied science, transfer programs, adult education, and continuing education for Eddy County.

A college that recently became independent is still building out its own house; faculty, student services, and operations roles now run under the SENMC name instead of NMSU's.
