Roughly 5,000 to 7,000 new cases are filed at the Supreme Court each Term, and the Justices grant plenary review with oral argument in about 80 of them. Congress created the Court in the Judiciary Act of September 24, 1789, and it was organized on February 2, 1790; the Term still opens by law on the first Monday in October. The volume has climbed steadily, from 1,195 new cases in the 1950 Term to 3,940 in the 1975 Term, and one Term's written opinions and orders can run to thousands of pages.
The Court staffs itself through its own officers: a Clerk, a Librarian, a Marshal, a Reporter of Decisions, a Court Counsel, a Curator, a Director of Information Technology, a Budget Director, a Human Resources Director, a Legislative Affairs Officer, and a Public Information Officer. It keeps its own police force as well, plus a Fellows program, an internship program, and a docent program.
