The HUD-VASH SUD Specialist supports chronically homeless Veterans using HUD-VASH vouchers, providing clinical care and housing support. The role focuses on substance use treatment, early intervention, and ongoing case management to help Veterans achieve stability, recovery, and long-term, permanent housing.
- VA Careers - Social Work: https://youtube.com/embed/enRhz_ua_UU Major Duties and Responsibilities, but not limited too: Conducts independent intakes, needs assessments, and psychosocial evaluations to identify substance use disorders and develop personalized recovery-oriented treatment plans. Performs active outreach in the community, emergency shelters, and on the streets alongside other homeless program specialists to locate and engage unhoused Veterans. Organizes and leads individual and group counseling, delivers early interventions for relapse prevention, and provides crisis management for Veterans dealing with dual diagnoses, serious mental illness (like PTSD), and physical health issues. Acts as an embedded expert on the HUD-VASH team, providing consultations, joining other case managers on home visits when substance use is suspected, and collaborating with local community agencies and acute treatment providers. Helps establish referral procedures, contributes to policy-making and service planning discussions, collects and reviews performance data, and maintains precise clinical documentation. Trains multidisciplinary team members on substance use assessments, anger management, and life skills, while also providing clinical oversight and supervision to social work trainees and staff working toward their state licensures. Participates in an on-call social worker rotation (which may require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts), responds to the National Homeless Call Center, and ensures safety standards, infection control protocols, and OSHA guidelines are rigorously maintained during both office and field work.
