Purpose of the LPN is to perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the veteran. In this position the LPN is primarily assigned to provide foot and nail care; may also assist in podiatry and general surgery care. Has potential to cross-train to other departments to help better fulfill the mission of caring for our Veterans, and to be able to fill in for other departments.

Patient Care Demonstrates knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on patient's condition. With minimal supervision, plans and carries out assignments following VHA directives and local Numbered Memoranda. Provides appropriate patient and family education regarding disease condition, procedures, tests, and health maintenance. Observes and appropriately responds to subtle changes in patient's behavior by providing emotional/physical support/intervention to prevent a problem. Uses the 6 Rights of Medication Administration, including the use of two patient identifiers. Participates in Medication Reconciliation by reviewing with patient/care giver medication list, annotate changes on the list for PCP's review, enter non-VA meds in CPRS. Provides ambulatory nursing care to patients with acute and chronic healthcare needs, including responding to triages as appropriate. Responds to medical emergencies such as "medical urgencies" and nursing alerts as appropriate. Education and Training Updates personal knowledge regarding current trends in Primary Care through continuing education courses, annual mandatory training, and in-service programs. Serves as preceptor or mentor for newly assigned health technicians, LPNs, and interns. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
