The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing operations of the Ambulatory Care Service as well as foster team development, ensure compliance with standards of clinical practice, and serve as a key liaison between staff and leadership. The Assistant Nurse Manager will function as a clinical expert and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or overseeing direct patient care.

The Assistant Nurse Manager will exercise the authority to direct work, assign duties, evaluate performance, recommend employee awards, deny leave, recall employees to duty, propose discipline, and to adjust their grievances, or to effectively recommend such proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision, Some common examples include but are not limited to the following examples: Serve as a first line supervisor of nursing personnel in the patient care area ensuring the Head Nurse/Nurse Manager retains VA Handbook 5007 requirements (examples may include but not limited to supervising the nursing assistants and/or licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPNs/LVNs) in the patient care area or supervising the nursing personnel on evening and/or night shift). Approve schedules and leave for employees under their direct supervision Appraise performance, recommend performance standards, and recommend performance awards for employees under their direct supervision. Serve as a hiring official during the recruitment process for employees under their direct supervision. Recommend proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision. In addition, the Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for assisting the Nurse Manager with personnel on the unit who they do not directly supervise; expectations may include but are not limited to: Draft schedules and leave for final approval by the Nurse Manager Provide input into the performance of employees with the final evaluation completed by the Nurse Manager Assist with making recommendations for selection of candidates for employment Apply clinical knowledge/judgement to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes; Provide feedback to the Nurse Manager who ultimately ensures nursing personnel provide timely nursing care that complies with generally accepted standards of practice. Oversee work assignments and provide reports of contact or assist with fact findings as needed to provide the Nurse Manager with the information necessary to make recommendations for counseling and/or disciplinary actions.
